Experience Turku/Åbo

To see and do

  • Aboa Vetus Ars Nova

Saturday September 10th, this will be where we dance until it becomes Sunday September 11th. Most days, it is the Museum of Archaeology and Contemporary Art.

  • Turku Art Museum

The collection of the Turku Art Museum is considered national treasure, comprising over 7600 works displayed in changing collection exhibitions.

The museum was built in 1904 (it’s one year older than Norway!) and hosted 56000 visitors in 2019. For some unknown reason, numbers from 2020 and 2021 are not accessible…

  • Art tour

Turku Artists’ Association hosts a website with different galleries and museums worth visiting, both public and artist-run.

If you have time, why not take the full tour?

  • Turku Castle

On the banks of the river Aura stands Turku Castle, one of the oldest buildings still in use and the largest surviving medieval building in Finland.

The Castle Church is where we will have our wedding ceremony.

  • Turku Cathedral

The only medieval basilica in Finland and considered to be the most important religious building in the country. At least according to Wikipedia, and everything on Wikipedia is true.

  • Turku City Library

The Renaissance meets modern architecture at the Turku City Library. The library consists of the “old building”, constructed in 1903, and the “new building”, constructed in 2007.

Check it out for the books, the art, and the architecture.

  • Hansakortteli

In Norway, ‘Hansa’ is a beer. In Turku, ‘Hansa’ is the oldest, largest, and most distinctive shopping centre. It is also the home of Åbo Svenska Teater - the oldest theatre in Turku.

And yes, they have a Moomin shop.

  • Kakola prison tour

Kakola was the most famous prison in Finland until 2007. It was designed for long term confinement and all the worst criminals of the country were sent to Kakola for 150 years.

Now, the prison has been turned into a hotel, and you can get a tour of the premises, hearing all about the people who served time, their lives and escape attempts.

  • Ruissalo island

The best nature destination for city people! Far away enough to feel like a proper get-away, close enough to not require sleeping bags or other outdoorsy equipment.

The massive English oaks of the island provide a home for thousands of different species.

  • Aura river

Aura river runs from Oripää, via Pöytyä, Aura, and Lieto, before it discharges into the Archipelago Sea in the middle of Turku.

Live like a local, and take a walk along the banks that have been inhabited for at least 6000 years.
